Cell Phone Charging Evangelism
Our creative youth leader in San Jose, Marilyn Aralar, has come up with an especially attractive form of evangelism. 3 months after the typhoon, there is still no power in the San Jose district of Tacloban City. Marilyn offered free cell phone and flashlight charging to teenagers, along with songs and Bible Study time. About 50 neighbors came to get an electrical charge, and went away learning more about Jesus, the Light of the World. Those of you who donated to the Typhoon Relief fund provided the generator and gasoline. Thank you!
Wanted: Youth Worker
Marilyn Aralar grew up in New Life Baptist Church of San Jose. During her youth days, there were only about 6 young people in the church. Sadly as time went by, her fellow young people one by one turned away from God and stopped coming to church. She felt lonely having no peers in the church. How she prayed there would be many young people who will worship and serve the Lord in their generation!
Now there are many teenagers in the church. Most of them were Marilyn’s former students in the pre-primary class. Seeing their number, a hope sprang up in her heart. She prayed that someone would lead and guide them, and that a group of young people will be formally organized. However, after many years the church still didn’t have a youth worker. God worked in the heart of Marilyn and she volunteered to serve the youth in any way she can. Later she realized that serving the youth is fun and satisfying. Marilyn thanks the Lord for answering her prayer through Youth of Passion (YOP).
Youth of Passion (YOP)
YOP is a ministry of New Life San Jose. It is a group of young people who aim to serve the Lord and reach out other youth through Performing Arts and other ministries. The group values Love, Zeal, and Christlikeness. Marilyn acts the over-all Director, while Gemma Pascubillo, a volunteer Youth Worker from New Life Tacloban serves as Performing Arts Director. Five other senior youth serve as Key Leaders.
YOP organization has greatly helped in addressing the need of the church for ministry workers. If you visit San Jose church, you will see its young people involved in various ministries. They act as Worship leaders and accompanists during church services. They run a Student Center and hold youth evangelistic meetings. In March 2011, they formed “Young Energetic Servants of God” (YES G), a ministry for grade school children. Members of the YOP teach kids the word of God. They also train them for ministry. They understand their own need to grow spiritually and the need to disciple younger ones at the same time. The members of New Life San Jose are very thankful to the Lord because He raised a new generation of worshippers and servants in the persons of YOP.
Passion for Full-Time Ministry
On June 5, 2011 the members of YOP bade goodbye to one of their members: Jester Lagunzad. Jester is a new Christian who was baptized on December 2009. It was Pastor Oriel who shared to him the gospel and discipled him. Jester comes from a poor family. He wasn’t able to attend college. In his teenage years he drove a pedicab to help his parents earn a living. Despite their family condition, Jester is a happy person. He makes no excuses in serving the Lord. His fast spiritual growth and humble personality were enough to make him one of the key leaders of YOP. Now he has become the first Bible School student from New Life San Jose. Praise God!
